Birth Place of Shivaji Maharaj and a matter of dispute of his birthdate by historians

Shivaji was born in the hill-fort Shivneri near the city of Junnar, till date it is near Pune District. While Jijabai was pregnant, she had prayed the local Devi called “Shivai” for good of her expected child. The name of Shivaji Maharaj is not derived from Lord Shiva but in fact the regional Devi by the name of Shivai.

The exact birthdate of Shivaji Maharaj has been a matter of dispute among the historians. The Government of Maharashtra accepts the 3rd day of the dark half Phalguna, 1551 of Saka calendar (which is 19th Feb. 1630, Friday) as the official birthdate of Shivaji Maharaj. So, The founder of the Maratha Kingdom, Shivaji was born to be a natural leader and fighter on 19th February, 1630.

However, some other historians such as Jadunath Sarkar and Rao Bahadur Sardesai believed that Shivaji Maharaj was born in 1627.

The various suggested dates includes:

-The 2nd day of the light half of Vaisakha in the year 1549 of Saka calendar i.e. 6th April 1627.

-10th April 1627

-May 1627
